Pentahex Poncho

This poncho was first made for a Stitch Along Project and done in 3 parts. It has 2 pentagons and 2 hexagons that are stitched together then a collar and bottom round is added to finish it off. Click image to see larger photo.

Materials Needed
Worsted weight acrylic yarn. Caron Simply Soft in Bone. #9703 I bought 6 skeins
Size H/8 or 5mm aluminum crochet hook
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Yarn Thickness: 3mm
Gauge: 5dc=1"
Finished Size: 20" x 20" from flat side to flat side
Skill Level: Beginner

Instructions
Special Stitch (Shell) 3dc, ch2, 3dc in place indicated.
Special Stitch Starting (cluster) Ch3, *yo, insert hook in stitch indicated draw up a loop, yo draw through 2 lps on hook then rep from * one more time, then yo and draw yarn through all 3 lps on hook.

Cl (cluster): *yo, insert hook in stitch indicated draw up a loop, yo draw through 2 lps on hook then rep from * two more times, then yo and draw yarn through all 4 lps on hook.

Special Stitch: Decrease
Yo insert hook in next st pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, insert hook again in next st and pull up loop then yo and draw through 2 lps on hook, yo pull through last 2 lps on hook.

Hexagon: Make 2 the same.
RND 1: Ch6. Join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch4. Dc in ring. Ch1, 11 times. Join w/slst to 3rd ch of ch4.

RND 2: Slst into the next ch1 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same sp. Ch1. Sk next ch1 sp. *Shell in next ch 1 sp. Ch1. Sk next ch1 sp. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 3: Slst into each of the next 2 dc & into the next ch2 sp. Ch3, 1dc, ch2, 2dc in same sp. 2dc in next ch1 sp. *2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch1 sp. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

END Part 2
Assembly
Using a yarn needle, stitch the pentagons and hexagons together using a lacing stitch to form a flat seam. Follow the diagram below for how to place them together. Use the 2 hexagons as the front and back and use the pentagons as the shoulders and arms.

Neck Band or Collar:
Lay stitched together poncho in front of you so the hexagons are flat in the center and the pentagons are on the sides. Join yarn in the top right ch2 joint space.

RND 1: Ch3. Dc in each dc and in each ch1 sp across to the other end. Work 2 dc in next ch2 joint space, in the joint itself and in the next ch2 joint space. Now you should be on the back side of the poncho. Dc in each st and in each ch1 sp across to the other end and work 2 dc in next ch2 joint space and in the joint itself. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 2: Ch3. Decrease 1, dc in each of the next 3 dc, 11 times.

Decrease 5. Dc in each of the next 3 dc, decrease 1, 10 times. Decrease 1. Dc in each of the next 2 dc. Decrease 3. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off and weave ends into back of work.

Outer Edges
Join yarn at any ch2 joint space just to the left of that joint.

RND 1: Ch3, dc in same sp. Ch1. (2dc in next ch1 sp. Ch1.) Rep bet () to the next ch2 corner space. *2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch2 corner space. Rep bet () to the next ch2 corner sp. 2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch2 corner sp. Rep bet () all the way in each ch1 and ch2 joint spaces to the next ch2 corner sp. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 2-5: Slst in the next dc and into the next ch1 sp. Work 2 dc in each ch1 sp around separated by a ch1 sp. Work 2dc, ch2, 2dc in each ch2 point space around. Join w/slst to top of ch3 when you get back to where you started.

RND 6: Slst in next dc and in next ch1 sp. Sc in next ch1 sp. 7tr in next ch1 sp, sc in next ch1 sp until you get to the next ch2 point space. *Work 9 tr in next ch2 point space. Sc in next ch1 sp. (7tr in next ch1 sp. Sc in next ch1 sp.) Rep bet () until you get to the next ch2 point space. Rep from * around. You will end with 7tr in last ch1 sp. Join w/slst to first sc. Fasten off and weave ends into back of work.

NOTE: Depending on where you started on the first round of the outer edges, you may have to start this last round with a ch4, 6tr in same sp then a sc in next sp. You might want to check your work by starting with a count at a point and know you need to have a shell there with a sc in the next space and 7 tr in the next space back to where you are starting.
