Julie's Granny Square

This was one of the first granny squares I designed for the site. It was also the background of this site for a while. It is fast and easy to make.

Materials Needed
Worsted weight yarn in 4 colors
I used Red Heart colors 313, Aran: 375, Raspberry,
A scrap of Christmas green and Red.
Size H/8 or 5.00mm aluminum crochet hook by Susan Bates was used.
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge: 4dc=1"
Thread Size: 4mm
Finished Size: 6"x6"
Skill Level: Beginner

Special stitches used:
Starting Cluster (stcl): 
Ch 2, Yo insert hook in ring, draw up a lp and pull through 2 lps on hook. Repeat from * until there are 3 lps on hook. Yo draw through all 3 lps on hook.  The ch 2 is part of the starting cluster. 

(3dc cl) 3 dc cluster stitch. To Make a 3 dc cluster stitch do the following, *Yo insert hook in st, sp or ring. Draw up a lp and pull through 2 lps on hook. Repeat from * until there are 4 lps on hook. Yo draw through all 4 lps on hook.

Instructions

RND 1: With Color 1, Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.  Stcl in ring. (Ch 2, work 1 3dc cl in ring, ch 2). Repeat bet ( ) until you have a total of eight 3 dc cl's around. Join with sl st to top of first cl. Break off

RND 2: With Color 2, Tie yarn into the first ch 2 sp. Ch 3, (counts as first dc), work 2 dc in same sp. Ch 1, work 3 dc in same sp. You have just made a shell. *Ch 1, work a 3dc cluster in next ch 2 sp. Ch 1, Work a shell in the next ch 2 sp. Ch 2. Repeat from * around. You will have a shell in 4 corners and a 3dc cl on each side. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. Tie off green.

RND 3: With Color 3, Tie yarn into the first ch 2 corner sp. Ch 3, 2 dc , ch 2, 3 dc in same sp.  (Ch 2. Cl in next ch 1 sp. Ch 1. Cl in next ch1 sp.  Ch2.)  *3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch 2 sp. Ch 2.  Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. Fasten off.

RND 4: With Color 4, Tie yarn into the first ch 2 sp. Ch 3, 3 dc, ch2, 4 dc in same sp. Ch 2. (Cl in next ch 2 sp, ch 1.  Cl in next ch1 sp, ch1. Cl in next ch2 sp, ch2.)  *4dc, ch2, 4dc in next ch 2 corner sp. Ch 2. Rep bet ( ) once. Rep from * around.  Join with sl st to top of ch 3. 

RND 5: Color 4. Ch1, sc in each of the next 3dc. 2sc, ch2, 2sc in next ch2 corner sp. Sc in each of the next 4 dc. (2sc in next ch2 sp. Sc in cl, sc in next ch1 sp, twice. Sc in next cl. 2sc in next ch2 sp.) *Sc in each of the next 4 dc, 2sc, ch2, 2sc in next ch2 corner sp, sc in each of the next 4 dc. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to ch1. Fasten off and weave all ends into back of work.

 

This pattern was corrected, updated and a round added to make it more square and easier to use in an afghan on June 4, 2020.
