Julie's Sunflower Square

This 7" square would look wonderfule combined with many other 7" flower squares in an afghan! It is a direct result of a request for a 7" flower square for a friendship exchange. It starts at the center with brown then ends with the inside row of petals on the flower.

Materials Needed
Small amounts each of worsted weight acrylic yarn in brown, orange and green. Red Heart was used in the example.
Size H/8 5mm aluminum crochet hook
Yarn Needle

Yarn Thickness: 4mm
Gauge: 4sc=1"
Finished Size: 7"x7"
Skill Level: Intermediate

Instructions
RND 1: With brown. Ch4, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch1. 11sc in ring. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 2: Work in back lp only. Ch1. Sc in same st as slst. 2sc in each sc around. Join w/slst to ch1. (24 sc)

RND 3: Work in back lp only. Ch1. 2sc in next st. *1sc in next st. 2sc in next st. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to ch1. (36sc) Fasten off brown.

RND 4: Join orange to same st as slst. Work in back lps only. (Ch8. Slst in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 2 chs. Hdc in each of the next 2 chs. Dc in each of the next 2 chs.) Sk next sc. *Slst in next sc. Rep bet () once. Sk next sc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first ch of the first ch8. Fasten off.

RND 5: Working behind petals just made and on the back lps only of the skipped scs. Join green to any skipped sc. Ch1, sc in same st. 2sc in each skipped sc around. Join w/slst to ch1. (36sc)

RND 6: Work in both lps. Ch3, dc in same st as slst. Ch2. 2dc in next sc. (Ch1. Sk next st 2dc in next sc. three times) *Ch1. Sk next st. 2dc in next sc. Ch2. 2dc in next st. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 7: Slst in next dc and into the next ch2 corner sp. Ch3, dc, ch2, 2dc in same sp. Ch1. (2dc in next ch1 sp. Ch1. four times) *2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch2 corner sp. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 8: Slst in next dc and into the next ch2 corner sp. Ch3, dc, ch2, 2dc in same sp. Ch1. (2dc in next ch1 sp. Ch1. five times.) *2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch2 corner sp. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 9: Ch1. Sc in next dc. 2sc, ch2, 2sc in next ch2 corner sp. Sc in each of the next 2 dc. Sc in next ch1 sp. (Sc in each of the next 2 dc. Sc in next ch1 sp. five times) *Sc in each of the next 2 dc. 2sc, ch2, 2sc in next ch2 corner sp. Sc in each of the next 2 dc. Sc in next ch1 sp. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to ch1. Fasten off green.

Inside Orange Petals
Join orange yarn to the front lp of any of the skipped sc of rnd 4 where you joined the green. (This round of petals is shorter than the first round of petals.) *Ch6. Slst in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 2 chs. Hdc in each of the next 2 chs. Slst in front lp of next skipped sc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first ch of the first ch6. Fasten off, weave ends into back of work.
